standing wave
  • A wave in which the antinodes and nodes do not change position through a given medium, such as a transmission line. Such waves usually occur as a result of the total or partial reflection of said wave by a barrier such as a discontinuity in a transmission line. This contrasts with a progressive wave, whose antinodes and nodes progress along the medium at the speed of the wave. Also called stationary wave.
