steady-state theory
  • noun a theory that the universe has always existed at a uniform density that is maintained because new matter is created continuously as the universe expands
  • (written as Steady State Theory)
Theory of the universe whereby material appears continuously. Under Steady State Theory the expansion of the universe would not alter its appearance significantly, since new material would appear as the old receded. The discovery of the cosmic background radiation, apparently the remains of the big bang, destroyed the steady state theory.
