stratosphere
  • The part of the atmosphere bounded by the tropopause below and the stratopause above, about 12–50km above the Earth’s surface. Although the gasses of the stratosphere are very thin, they can be warm – sometimes over 30° – because of the presence of stratospheric ozone, which captures the energy of the Sun’s ultraviolet light.
  • The layer within the atmosphere that occurs between the troposphere and the mesosphere. It ranges from approximately 10 kilometers to about 50 kilometers.
