• A computer which is exceedingly fast, tremendously powerful, and particularly expensive. A supercomputer may have thousands of processors, and perform over 1015 floating-point calculations or operations per second. Such a computer is utilized for performing highly sophisticated and complex calculations, such as the study of the nature of matter, or the calculation of the highest prime number at a given time. A mainframe can usually handle many more tasks and applications at the same time, but a supercomputer can handle a single task or application considerably more rapidly.
