superior conjunction
  • noun the position of an astronomical object when it is opposite earth on the far side of the Sun
  • (written as Superior Conjunction)
Condition for Mercury or Venus in which it is precisely on the opposite side of the Sun from the Earth. At superior conjunction the planet’s illuminated face is fully presented to the Earth, but the planet is then at its smallest and hardest to observe, since it is at its farthest distance from the Earth and close to the Sun in the sky.
