synchronous satellite
  • An artificial satellite whose orbit is synchronized with that of the earth, so that it remains fixed over the same spot above the planet at all times. Such a satellite is usually located at an altitude of approximately 35,900 kilometers, and its orbit is in the plane of the equator. As few as three of these satellites can provide worldwide coverage. Used, for instance, for communications and broadcasting. Also called geosynchronous satellite, or geostationary satellite.
