  • The system of units in general use among scientists, using as its basic units the metre (length), second (time), kilogramme (mass), plus other basic units like the Candela (for illumination), and derived units such as the Newton for force. The basic units are those not defined in terms of the others, while the derived units are defined from the basic ones. Thus a Newton is the force which accelerates a mass of one kilogram by one metre per second per second.
