thin film
  • A technology utilized to apply upon a substrate a film which is less than ten micrometers in thickness, although the thickness may be less than 0.1 micrometer. Thin-film technology is usually employed to form active or passive circuit components and interconnections, using techniques such as sputtering or chemical-vapor deposition. Used, for instance, in the formation of ICs, to apply magnetic thin films, or in the preparation of organic semiconductors. This contrasts with thick film (1), which can involve thicknesses of greater than 100 micrometers. Also called thin-film technology.
  • A film applied utilizing thin-film technology.
