transducer
  • A component, circuit, or device which converts a non-electrical parameter, magnitude, signal, or phenomenon into a proportional or corresponding electrical equivalent. Also, that which performs the converse transformation. For example, a microphone converts acoustic energy into electrical energy, while a speaker converts electrical energy into acoustic energy. There are many other examples, including piezoelectric, magnetic, pressure, photoelectric, and resistive transducers. Nearly all transducers are sensors of some kind.
  • A component, circuit, or device which converts an input in one energy form and produces an output in another energy form. For example, a photoelectric cell converts light energy into electrical energy.
  • A component, circuit, or device which converts a parameter, magnitude, signal, or phenomenon in one form into that in another form. For example, that which converts a movement into a change in pressure, as occurs in a piston.
