- Memory which is simulated to appear as larger than it really is. For example, memory management and secondary storage, such as a hard disk, may be utilized to provide such memory. The virtual memory so created is divided into segments called pages, and these are swapped to and from disk locations as needed, with the operating system keeping track of all mapping, addressing, and the like. Not only does this improve system performance and speed, it also enables running applications which would otherwise be too large. Its abbreviation is VM. Also called virtual storage (2).
