wow and flutter
- In sound reproduction, a form of distortion manifesting itself as slow fluctuations of pitch. It is caused by equipment speed variations occurring during recording, dubbing, or reproduction. Wow describes the lower-frequency variations, while flutter (2) describes the higher-frequency fluctuations. Usually expressed as a percentage. In digital devices, such as CD players or DATs, wow and flutter values are drastically below the threshold of human detection.
